About the Devon Rex

The Devon Rex is a unique breed with an elfin appearance that sets it apart from all other cats. With large, low-set ears, enormous eyes, and a pixie-like face, Devon Rex cats look like they stepped out of a fairy tale.

The breed originated in Devon, England, in 1960 when a curly-coated kitten was born to a stray cat. Unlike the similar Cornish Rex, the Devon Rex’s curly coat is caused by a different genetic mutation. Their soft, wavy fur feels like crushed velvet and comes in virtually every color and pattern.

Devon Rex cats are known for their outgoing, playful personalities. They’re often called ‘monkeys in cat suits’ due to their love of climbing, jumping, and getting into mischief. They’re highly intelligent and can learn tricks, play fetch, and even walk on a leash.

These cats are extremely people-oriented and want to be involved in everything their family does. They’re shoulder-perchers and lap-sitters who love warmth and cuddles. They don’t do well when left alone for long periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Devon Rex cats are often called hypoallergenic, but this isn't entirely accurate. They shed less than most cats due to their sparse coat, which may reduce allergens spread around the home. However, they still produce allergenic proteins. Some allergy sufferers tolerate them better than other breeds.
